Here’s a little lesson in publishing finances: revenue is the total amount of income generated
by your book sales and services. Use the calculator below to estimate how much you’ll make in a year after
your publishing investment. All monetary values are in USD.
These calculations are based on the following estimations of publishing costs and book sales: retail price of $19.95 USD, sized 5.5” x 8.5”, and 160-page paperback, black and white interior, with a full-color cover. Based on our experience at Publish Your Purpose, books at in-person events are sold for $20 USD, and the average printing cost per book at $7.05 USD—with a net profit of $12.95 USD per book.
As an example, without factoring in an increase in client and speaking revenue, if you invested $20,000 in publishing your book, you would need about 1,544 in-person sales to recoup your costs. With the right strategy and bulk sales at conferences, this is an accessible sales target!
*This amount is based on the average-sized non-fiction book (approximately 33,000 words). The print cost and retail price may vary based on word count.
**This amount does not factor in sales tax, credit card transaction fees, or other personnel time.
