Identity Impact

In Identity Impact, Dina Proto, RN outlines the clinical connection between the negation of a child’s identity and certain health complications.

Drawing from her twenty years as a nurse – working in the ER, hospice, and everything in between – she challenges us to examine this critical question:

What is the potential fall out when a child’s identity doesn’t fit neatly into society’s box?

Proto believes that while we all struggle through the stages of growth, those along the LGBTQ continuum experience an additional layer of identity development, as well as stages of grief, that impact their coping mechanisms.

She asserts that the very people in our lives trained to mold and shape us into adults are, in fact, ill-prepared to guide the development of those within the LGBTQ community due to a lack of understanding, relevant research, and mandated training. Proto believes that by opening up the conversation around gender identity we can stop the cycle of treating health complications only after they occur, and start providing education to prevent them.

What's in it for me? As executives introduce changes to make their workplaces more LGBTQ inclusive, they are encouraged to answer this question for their non-LGBTQ employees. Identity Impact offers a helpful framework which outlines important human development milestones - namely that everyone has a gender identity and a sexual orientation. When executives lead with this reality, they along with their non-LGBTQ employees build empathy for the inequalities LGBTQ people continue to endure. They are also more likely to embrace changes that transform a workplace into one where everyone knows they belong. Give this book a read, and you'll understand how to avoid the inevitable collisions that can occur at the intersections of identity, and instead enjoy a scenic journey.

Having been a Board certified emergency physician for 20 years, I have witnessed many facets of family and friend interactions. I have worked with and known Dina for many years and I can’t think of a better person to help bring the Identity conversation to the forefront. Not only is she a good nurse but she is a caring, loving, and open individual. The acceptance of all people regardless of their beliefs or sexual orientation has to be started as early as possible. An open, vulnerable society will only lead to acceptance, tolerance, and love. As a father of a gay son, demonstrating our understanding and tolerance has allowed open, honest dialogue, not only in our immediate family but within our circle of friends as well.
